As that title suggests, the work can sometimes come off as simply morbid kitsch. More often, it is sincerely death-haunted, which some critics see as the response of younger artists to a post-9/11 world.

Remember when 9/11 heralded "the death of irony"?

I'm willing to buy into a Sept. 11 connection if we're talking about the evident nostalgia for adolescence, which is everywhere apparent, but please... "some critics" search for signs of young America's new death cult yet apparently can't see all the caricature for what it is.
