Franklin Einspruch has solved the problem:
Okay, I'd like this blog to not suck when Art Basel rolls around this year. I think I have a plan: blow off the openings.
No, really. I think that I-never-want-to-look-at-art-again feeling that one gets after Art Basel comes from attending all the openings. Art isn't a party, just like your heartbeat isn't a party.
Very true. I can - and do - get all the cheap white wine I want at home. I don't really trust my reactions to anything seen at an opening - either I'm enjoying myself too much and overvalue what I'm looking at, or I'm not looking at all. The best time, for me at any rate, to go see anything is in the morning, right as the gallery (or museum) opens. It's amazing how much time one can spend undisturbed by being a morning person following art.
